Now that I've got an AR that is very accurate, I'm running a 24", 1:12 barrel and have 3/8" to 1/2" groups at 100yds with 40, 50 and 60 grain bullets doing ladders and have not even fine tuned anything yet and I have a variety of powders, what is your normal go to grain size of bullet for .223/5.56 for coyotes? I'm partial to the 40's for the speed but I've had some pretty heavy winds at Mountain Home before and I'll be back in April.

Usually when you have a newer gun you will try to match the bullet grain with what the gun shoots best. It seems that your gun is shooting many weights with enough consistency and .223 is small enough that you could run almost any grain for coyotes. If you have heavy winds where you are at you might want to look into shooting heavier loads. IMO you could use balistic, hollow point etc and have a lot of success without blowing out hides or having them run off to far.

Good to know. When in Idaho last the winds around Mountain Home do seem to kick up from time to time. Not unusual to have a 10mph wind going fairly frequently. I originally was setting up my .243 with some 58 grain bullets but a little less velocity may make the hides in better shape.

.243 is a good round IMO for coyotes. I run a single shot Thompson Contender in .204 Ruger that shoot a 40-grain V-max around 3800-4000 ft per second and have not had an exit in any coyote I have shot in the last 5 years. Whether they be 25 yards or 250+.

50grn ballistic tip fiocchi's in my AR cuz I get them so cheap. They group as well as Hornady out to about 200 yards but much farther than that the wind plays heck on them. I like 58 grain in .243 moving at 4,000 fps and I don't need to explain why that works so great! But its shotgun season right now so...

Our first Deer/Elk season just closed so we are back to shotgun too for birds. Went yesterday and the Snow Geese have figured out what plots of land are no shooting on all the farm land so nobody is getting much shooting in.

This time of year Rob and I are shotgunning the coyotes! Nothing like hitting hard charging 'yotes with a load of buckshot to the face!
