Well, when is it? ;D I sure as heck am no Biologist[or even close LOL!]. But I have formed opinions over the yrs from what I have personally seen, meshed in with what I have read from the experts.
Many people say, January & February mainly. Well, I don't disagree with that. However, I have seen a wider spanse in time. when it comes to pre-breeding & breeding time.
What I have seen is Red Fox typically pr-up & clean out an old den hole or dig a fresh one. A month or a tad more, earlier than do the coyotes. I have also seen where a Red has had a very late litter. Real late in fact. As her pups were still quite small middle of October
What I'm getting at is, ALL is not etched in stone as some may believe. When a Biologist starts pin-pointing "exact" times when an animal will do something. I cringe some. Maybe true for "some" animal specie" But NOT ALL in that specie, in that perticular time frame.
I've seen & watched this one local pr of coyotes with their yearling off-spring. Seen them on 3 seperate occasions over a 5 yr time span. This "perticular" pr of local coyotes. Would scatter their yearlings around the latter part of December. The 15-18th of December, specifically. Interestingly enough, that wk was quite accurate at the time of scattering their pups. I suspect this scattering, was initiated primarily because the adult female was coming into heat? Well, thats my theory anyway.
I have also seen pr's of Red Fox sitting on a fresh cleaned out den hole mound in mid November. There is no reason I can think of, why a pr of Fox would be sitting on a den mound. Unless they were prepared to den, then drop pups. As they do not use a den hole. Unless they are preparing to den, or seeking hard shelter form a Winter storm, ect. Otherwise the coyotes & Red Fox, bed elsewhere outside.
