My partner, Ned, and I hit the ranch at daylight. The first stand was a blank. We parked the truck to walk to the next one, got out, and a coyote showed up at about 150 yards. My rifle was in the back of the truck so I racked a round, tried to bark it to a stop, took a hurried shot. And missed. No takers on the next two stands.
Fourth stand. Just as we got to our position a coyote walked out from some cattle. Naturally, we were busted. It made it's way up a hill and lay down facing us at 362 yards. Tempting, but cattle were too close. Ned was sitting about 10 feet to my left. This coyote was to his left. Ned motioned that he saw one to my right. It was obscured from me. He kept motioning that he could see it and it finally came into my view. Just puttering along. Seemingly not paying any attention to the Foxpro. Worked it's way out of sight. We saw it again a little closer. Again went from sight. We expected it to reappear in a little draw between two small hills. Instead it showed up on the very top of the one to our right. Still just puttering and showing no interest in the call. I peeked at Ned and saw that he was on it so I motioned him to shoot. I covered my ears and leaned back. He dumped the small female at about 75 yards.
While he was shooting across my field, it was completely safe. I had motioned for him to shoot. I had utmost confidence in him. We have hunted together for over forty years and worked side by side for over twenty five.
This coyote came from over a half mile while in our vision. She took a loooong time and never once acted as though she heard the call. Two more blank stands and we called it a day.
