They started to come out about 3pm Wednesday after the sun came out, the wind made it a bit tough but we still seen quite a few until about 6:30pm, which seems about the time most of them go back in for the night. Yesterday, Thursday, they started coming out strong again around 2pm and some stragglers until around 7pm and three of us went through about 200 rounds and the wind was pretty forgiving.
Seen a couple huge ones, shot one and it went over, shot the next and it tipped over and went to get my prizes and all I found was a blood trail. Could not believe how big they were nor that they were not at the hole laying up top. Hit them both good but went center mass instead of shoulders as I was rushing the shot just to hit them and not let them get away. Seemed about the size of some of the Prairie Dogs we were shooting at earlier this week in Montana.
While having lunch I broke out the AR 15 with my 40 grain pills and tried it with the 3x9 Coyote Scope, definitely not the thing to use on these little guys as the round reticle was not even close to enough to really pin point these guys as it sits 2-1/2" high above center of barrel and no fine cross hairs, the gun jumping a little after the shot, big puffs of dirt, it is hard to see if you hit or not and even hand loading it is a bit too pricey. I'll be sticking with the .17hmr. Thread the needle.

I went out today after beenz. Perfect weather, sun shining, just a slight breeze. In two hours I probably saw 18 to 20 squirrels. Shot 8 for sure, couple more maybes. Saw a few young ones but they're not there like they should be. Should be able to shoot 8 in five minutes, not two hours. Plague? Shot out? Well maybe that will give me a better chance in the tounament. There was several other people out there after a couple hours so I gave it up.

Buddy and I went out yesterday afternoon around Pleasant Valley Road. Set up our table facing a hill about 100yds away. We were out for about 4 hours and shot about 15-20 each. Had a blast. Its the first time I've ever been piggin'. I could hardly contain myself. They were still pretty skittish and I attributed that to the wind. It was blowing pretty hard out there. I just had my .22 and my buddy brought a bolt action Ruger .22 and his .17HMR. One hilarious thing that happened. I shot one at about 50yds. It flopped around for a bit before expiring. Then, one of his buddies comes over and starts eating him! I heard they were cannibals and we saw a few get dragged into holes after they were shot, but this was insane. So I shot the cannibal too. lol. I think we are going to try out Sand Hollow again soon. We both enjoyed being able to get a few hours of shooting after work and it wasn't very busy out there. Anyway, for those who enjoy pictures, here are a few of our kills. I guess anyone who doesn't want to see dead whistle pigs has turned back at this point, but its worth mentioning that the pictures are graphic. The look on this next one's face is priceless. This was with the .17HMR. This last one I shot. I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but the bullet hit him straight on in the face, went into his body, and exited his back/butt area. It was a pretty good head shot from ~50yds.

Yeah, I've seen them eat each othr lots of times. It pays to watch your dead ones. Sounds like you had an enjoyable time and lots of fun. You need to show up Saturday for our whistle pig tournament. It's going to be fun and the more the merrier.

It is amazing how much dirt they can move. This one looks like he is near a badger hole, taking a nap, a dirt nap.

Went out again this afternoon. There was more of them out but still not near like they should be. I got 16 confirmed hits and a few more possibles. It was a beautiful day, should have been whistle pigs all over the place.

Went out Wednesday afternoon for about three hours. There were a few out but they're still not out there like they should be. I got seven confirmed kills. There was three other guys with me, they got a few, not sure how many. We should be getting seven in 5-10 minutes!

I thought I was going to miss varmint hunting this year. I was intending to go but when I was out target shooting look what I came across. What I haven't figured out is how they can make it back down into their hole. This one I ran out right after I shot it and it still made it halfway down its hole. I did wish I had some sort of varmint tip with me. Sorry about the fuzzy picture but my phone camera lens is cracked. The .223 still seems like and expensive way to hunt these critters but it sure was fun and all I had with me that day. This was Friday morning a much needed respite from work and other stresses.

Went out to day, rolled around in the dust and hunted a few whistle pigs. Confirmed 13 but I think I was closer to 20, just could not figure out where they went. You can see one example of the little guys that stood up too long next to the bipod leg. On my way home I saw some fellows out with shooting benches shooting squirrels. . . They didn't look dirty. I bet they didn't find the nice fat ones either. Hoping that this .22 shortage lets up soon. . . running out! Ahhhhhh! so with the whole two days I made it out this year I'm up to 14. P.s. does anybody know how to increase the size of the photo's in the post? . . . Ahhh Thanks P.S.S. Sorry I haven't made it out to the meetings. Probably will not for a while but I will come if and when I can. I hear you all have a fun time.

If you used the "Attach" feature, that is as big as it gets unless you click on the photo, then it opens a new page with a bigger picture.
Otherwise you have to open a Photobucket or other Picture Hosting account. You will have to edit the size of the photo that you upload to your account to 640x480 pix. Then upload it to your account, after it is uploaded, there will be some boxes under the photo, one of which is an "IMG" code, highlight it, copy and then paste into the browser window on the forum. It will show a code, but if you click the "preview" button you can see the picture.
