Almost every coyote I ever seen. Most were already looking at me before I ever spotted them from long range. One reason is, when I hunt spot/stalk, I spend the vast majority of my time. Scanning/glassing the down wind areas of hills, valleys & cover. That is where most coyotes are, most of the time. Many of these coyotes are near 1/2 mile or a tad more. Away from me when I see them. Some a little closer than 1/2 mile. Regardless, driving on Fall or Winter gravel roads can be abit loud. Casting noise. The coyotes hear this, they also typically are on an area with a view. Whether they are up high or down low on the terrain. They most often prefer a view to their down-wind areas. Below is a coyote bedded on a wide valley creek bottom. I stopped on a high hill, when I 1st seen the distant speck. I figured a coyote more than likely. Yup coyote, & it was already eyeing me from long range. Moral of the story; A caller, that comes into their call area. From the down-wind areas/angles. Your are more than likely, already behind the 8 ball. As any coyote up ahead is probably already eyeing you. You just don't know it, yet. zoomed in
