On Tuesday may 15th, Bob, David, George and Myself, met up with a couple new guys.
Please allow me to introduce Rob and Shawn. A couple really nice guys.
This is Rob:
This is Shawn:
Welcome Guys! We are glad that you were able to come out and hang with us!
We all met at Tom's Cabin for Brunch at 10am. We had good conversation about the animals that we persue, and the guns and cartridges that we employ to do the dirty deed.
It is a moment to reflect on the day ahead, to eat some good chow, and to get know one another better over a plate of biscuits and gravy, waffles, coffee, even a bowl of beans! (That's for you Bob).
After Brunch, we excused our selves from the table, and went to our pickups, then drove a couple miles to the sand hills.
Although a nice day, warm, and sultry, and overcast, the squirrels were not cooperating like they should have been. There were squirrels out running around, but were using the tall grass to their advantage, by staying low in it.
When we got to the area I wanted to go, I glassed the grass flat, and right away found a number of squirrels. I told Rob and Shawn to go ahead and find a spot, stop and shoot for awhile, they moved up the road about 100 yards and stopped, bailed out of the truck, and set up to start shooting.
Here is a portion of Rob and Shawn's squirrels:
Just as we got to the gate, I looked along the line of trucks, and George was not with us. I asked Bob if he saw George. He said that he had stopped to shoot. OK!
Well I opened the gate and moved my pickup through and to the side so others could pass. I waited for George to come, and soon he come rolling down the road. As he stopped I asked him if he found squirrels? He told me that he had seen a badger, and stopped to shoot it, but it went down a hole, so he waited a little while for it to come up, but didn't, so he went on to meet us.
After talking to George, I drove down behind Rob and Shawn. Shawn looked to me to be having trouble with his rifle. So, I walked over to him and asked what was going on. He said that his rifle was not firing. I asked to look at it. He said ok. So I tried to load a round, but the bolt woulf not close, after several times of doing this, I asked if I could take it apart. Shawn said. "Yes". I then reached into my pickup, and pulled out the Mean Green Slaying Machine, and handed it to him, told him to go shoot and have fun, until I figure out his gun. So, off he went shooting, and seemed to have a great time.
I took his 10/22 apart, and found that the firing pin was stuck forward. and it would not break loose. Shawn walked over to me, and told him what I found, and told him to take the rifle to Pete at RK Gunsmithing in Nampa, he can press out the roll pin and remove the firing pin, to figure out what is wrong with it. He said ok. I put it back together, leaving the bolt out, handing it to him, to put in his pickup. He continued to use my 10/22 for the remainder of the day.
I had done some trigger work on David's 10/22. Polished all the trigger assembly parts, made it smooth. I had taken a little to much tension off the hammer spring, and it was not striking the primer hard enough, so I fixed that also, it worked great after that. I shot it 10 times in fast secession, not a hickup.
George is lining up on a target? Good shooting form there George!
Bob and David drove around picking off squrrels as they went.
These guys, Bob, George, David, Robert (Bob2), sure have become good friends, and great supporters of the club. I really enjoy hanging out with them, and having lunch at Tom's Cabin with them, sure is a lot of fun, and great conversation. Thanks Guys! We may not cure the ill's of the world, but we sure do a number on the varmints! HAHAHAHA!
Rob shooting his TC Contender in 222 Rem. Another Handgunner! I love it!
Gary shooting his Springfield Armory1911 45acp.
BTW: I found out later in the day, that this was Rob and Shawn's First time "Piggin". Congratulations! You are Officially Varmint Hunters! I hope it is not the last time, I look forward to doing it again soon.
