I met a friend for some rock chuck shooting yesterday. Beautiful day, lots of sunshine and hardly any wind until late afternoon. We didn't see any at the first spot we went to and we thought maybe the day was going to be a bust. Then at the next spot I shot five, one took me two shots to get. I think Brent got three at this spot. He could have got more, I was busy keeping track of my own. We decided to try another spot that was on the way out.. Just as we pulled up the wind started blowing. Out there in the high desert the wind speed varies up and down and blows around in different directions. That makes it hard to guesstimate where or how much windage to hold. I spotted one standing upright at 219 yds. Right then the wind seemed to be blowing from right to left. I held what I thought was one chuck into the wind. I lucked out and guesstimated that one perfect. You could hear the "wop" and it splatterated him. Then I missed another one four times in a row. I couldn't see where the bullets were hitting and could not figure out where to hold. By then it was getting late and I needed to get started home as I had a long drive. I left Brent there shooting and I glassed a couple areas on my way out but didn't spot any more, don't know if he got anymore or not. I started out shooting 40 gr. V-Max bullets in my .204. Those do a good job on the chucks and any other varmint I've used them on, including coyotes and several badgers. I used up what I had of those with me then Switched to 39 gr. Speer TNT h.p.'s. Wow! What a mess those make of chucks!! Wish I could have got pictures but they were in pretty inaccessable places. Fun and enjoyable day.
