The Members Only IVH Dave Garren Memorial Rockchuck Rendezvous May 4, 2019 was a success once again!!! We all met up at the cafe for breakfast @8am. Then we had a little confab in front of the cafe before we caravans out to the. Chuck fields. Confabed again at our camp landing spot, unloaded atvs and utvs, ucased guns, loaded and locked our shooting instruments. Told everyone to be back at the camp landing for lunch of chambers and sausage dogs. The chuck shooting was scarce. I saw 6-7 by noon and shot 3. At lunch the others were commenting on how skittish the chucks were. Only a couple others actually was able to burn powder on some chucks. After lunch we went back out! Bob. And I could have bought a chuck, we saw nothing until around 4pm. Then we saw a bunch of them. I shot a total of 8-10 for the day. Bob got 1 big one. It was too far away to go look at, especially through the rocks. The one in the picture below was. A 10#'er. I shot it with the Ruger M77 Tang Safety, The "TERMINATOR" 6mm Remington with 73gr Barnes Verminator HP Bullets, MV around 3700 fps. I shot one at close to 100 yards and gave it flying lessons, launched it about 4 feet into air and about 3 feet to the right of where it was standing. It was awesome! The Terminator does a great job of whacking stuff, it actually blows stuff up! It is so cool to watch it do it's thing! No guessing if you hit it or if it is dead. Varmints and rodent don't stand a chance. Can't wait to go back and do it again! [id="159" thumbnail="1"] Attachments:

Yep, good day in the chuck fields. Don't know how the other guys did, haven't got a chance to talk to them yet. Gary and I were the last ones to head home. The chucks didn't really start coming out until late afternoon. Think we could have shot a few more but it was getting late and we had a long drive home. It was a beautiful day to be out and about. Lots of sun, almost no wind until late in the day and about 80 degrees. Fun filled day.

Before lunch I think my count was about 11 shot at with 9 taken. After lunch I only had 3 more shots with 2 taken for a total of 14 shots and 11 taken (1 was iffy, but the rest were solid).
I left the area about 2 or 2:30. It was my suspicion that Bob and Gary's experience was quite likely - the late afternoon would get busy again. I think the trick is to be out early, shoot 'til noon, then siesta until about 3 or 4 and be ready for a busy early evening. But be prepared for a long day and a long drive back home as the sun goes down.
Another day...

Glad you got a few. Chucks are one of my favorite varmints to shoot but we have to go so far to get into any. I wouldn't mind doing another camp out for a couple days. Then you could stay out to about sun down one day.

That's what I was thinking... drag the trailer down there for an over-nighter. But for me that's a challenge since I drag the jeep down behind the pick-up. If I had an ATV, then it would work. Or I had a camper for the back of the truck instead of a trailer. Oh well...
