Hey all,
I'm new to hunting, Idaho, and the forum. I want to start hunting but I've never hunted before. I shoot often and will be using my .223 with match 77gn loads. I know their good for accurate semi-long range shots but I don't know about hunting. Is there any licensing required or times of the year or any restrictions at all to hunt Coyotes or varmint game? Where would be a good place to start? I shoot ever weekend past the power lines off of pleasant valley road on the BLM lands.
If any one has any great advice or is willing to let me accompany their hunts and show me the ropes I'd be grateful. I just left the military, and I'd be grateful to learn what some of the seasoned community would be willing to teach.
Thanks,
Jared

Hello Jared, Welcome to Idaho and to the IVH Forums, glad you found the boards! Yes there are licensing requirements, anytime you shoot a gun on public ground, you have to have a current hunting license! To hunt any animal in Idaho you have to have a resident or non-resident hunting license, there are several options for non-resident licenses. There are several species in Idaho that are not protected, and can be hunted any time of year and taken in any quantity all year long. I suggest you get a Small Game Regs and read them. Here is a link to the pages: idfg.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/seasons-rules-upland-furbearer-2016-2017.pdfHunting of Predatory & Unprotected Animals Some animals are classified as “predators” or as “unprotected” and can be hunted and taken all year. Animals classified as predators in Idaho include coyotes, raccoons, jackrabbits, skunks, weasels, and starling. The most frequently hunted unprotected animals include marmots, fox squirrels, porcupines and Columbian ground squirrels, English sparrows, Eurasian-collared doves, and feral pigeons. These species may be taken in any amounts and at any time by holders of the appropriate valid Idaho hunting, trapping or combination hunting license, provided such taking is not in violation of state, county, or city laws, ordinances or regulations. idfg.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/seasons-rules-upland-hunting-rules-2016-2017.pdfThe ground squirrel thing is a little complicated in as where you can shoot them in Idaho. If you stay in the area of: South of the Payette River, to North of Glenns Ferry and East of the Snake River, (which encompasses all of the Treasure Valley) you will be safe, Unless you are shooting Colombian Ground Squirrels, which are non protected. But they live at higher altitudes, Like Cascade/McCall elevations, or high in the Owyhees, or high in the Seven Devils, or Sawtooths! Good Luck! Gary BTW: We have a meeting Dec 13th at 7pm at the Sunrise Cafe in Middleton, come down and meet some of the members and get to know some of them! They will be more likely to let you tag along if they were to get to know you a bit first! Also we have lunch at Tom's Cabin Cafe in Emmett each Wednesday morning at 11am, you are welcome to come down and chat with us, ask questions, have a great bowl of homemade beans and cornbread!

Hello... my name is Jim and I live up here in Grangeville. I had a chance to meet some of you at this years whistle pig shoot, that was alot of fun. I wanted to join to stay informed on the issues related to hunting in southern idaho. Ive hunted most of my life and really enjoy being in the woods. Like most of you, any time you can get out is time well spent. Up here around Grangeville I mostly hunt Whitetail, ive shot a couple of elk but feel like whitetail are my passion. My rifle of choice is my Tikka T3 lite in 270, never has let me down. Ive recently picked up a few toys I'm excited to shoot. A couple henry 22s and a keltec sub 2000 gen2 in 9mm. I have some family in Caldwell and a good friend in Emmett, so I do get down there some. I also spend alot of time fishing, (mostly bass) and come down to Emmett to fish some of the local ponds and lakes. I'm easy to talk to and look forward to swapping stories and meeting you all.
