With the general deer season coming to a close, the pressure was on to fill my tag. I made it out last weekend with plans to take the first legal buck I saw. I was hunting with a friend of mine who also had a buck tag and the same thing on his mind. We hiked up to the top of a ridge about two miles behind a locked gate to a perfectly aged clear cut. We have seen a lot of deer in this cut through out the years and it seemed like a great place to start glassing. Only a few minutes into our hunt we spotted some does feeding through the clear cut, knowing the rut was just around the corner we had hopes to find a buck close by! We were getting ready to head up the ridge to check out some other cuts when out of nowhere this buck appeared checking out the does we had been watching. As soon as we saw him we knew he was a good buck and one that we wanted to take. I ranged him right at 433yds, checked the wind, and got set up for the shot. I dialed my scope for 425yds, settled my nerves, and let the Savage 300wsm do what it does best! The shot found its mark, taking out both shoulders and putting the buck down in a hurry. The evening was coming to a close fast, we took some landmarks and headed in after our trophy. We found him laying right where we had expected. The work then begun! We field dressed the buck, loaded our packs and headed down the mountain. A great way to end the day! God bless and good hunting, Ty Nichols www.TysPredatorCalls.comwww.ShootersServicesUnlimited.comwww.SavageArms.com
